Celebrating the 43rd anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid


On the 43rd anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, the AARP issued a statement in its honor. Executive Vice President of AARP, Nancy LeaMond was the one who issued the statement.

LeaMond began by emphasizing the significance of the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965 as a part of American history. She underlined how the administration and the Congress came together to deal with the national crisis and provided health care to those who needed it the most. She then went on to say, that a generation since the country is again facing a crisis situation. The exponential rise in health care costs is making quality health care inaccessible to employers, families, state and the federal government. She said that the current health crisis threatens to make everyone vulnerable. 

LeaMond said that it must be the country’s top priority to ensure that all Americans can avail affordable health care. She said that the anniversary was a reminder of the tremendous role the elected officials have played with individuals and businesses taking more responsibility.LeaMond said that during the fall, the common American will get an opportunity to listen to elected officials and candidates about their probable solutions to manage health care costs. A lot needs to be done by the future Congress and Administration in this context.

LeaMond concluded by saying that a look into the past is only to aid the future ahead. The legacy of 1965 is a reminder of the importance of these issues in 2008 as well as 2009.
