Medical Nutrition Therapy Services and Medicare

After some major medical procedures there is the need to consult with a nutritionist about the way that your body will be able to handle the effects of your procedures.  In addition, just handling a condition that you are afflicted with can become much easier if you know what types of food you can eat to help to treat the situation.  Medicare will cover some of the cost for you getting help in these situations, the details are as follows.

Medicare may cover medical nutrition therapy and certain related services if you have diabetes or kidney disease, or you have had a kidney transplant in the last 36 months, and your doctor refers you for the service. The doctor’s referral is something to remember as Medicare tends to be sticklers for these things.  It may seem petty on some level, but they must require these things to keep costs down.

You pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, and the Part B deductible applies.  The total of 20% of the approved amount out of your pocket may not be as much as it seems on the surface as Medicare is able to generate good fees for these types of procedures.  Understanding the importance of this screening means that you should get out and get it done as soon as possible.
