What is a Medicare Certificate of Medical Necessity?

There are times in life where your health reaches the point where you need additional help from either man or machine. Daily functions or not, you may need help in performing something in your life that you can’t do on your own. Medicare steps up at this point and helps to suit your needs with your health insurance coverage.

Medicare requires a Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN) to authorize the use of durable medical items and equipment. You are responsible for informing your primary physician that this is necessary and that you cannot go on without it. Your doctor’s employee can fill it out if necessary, just so long as someone associated with the office passes on the notification.

The doctor and supplier will then work out the equipment coordination so that you are guaranteed to get the help that you need. If any information is missing they will take care of it between each other as Medicare will fulfill the demands. If your prescription changes or your certificate has to be updated you must get your physician involved again.
